Even if you're not traveling to China for the upcoming Beijing Olympic Games it's hard to escape the veritable flood of China travel information that has been emanating from this country. Even though Beijing will be overwhelmed with visitors, so many that a lot of locals will be leaving town during the Olympics to avoid the crush of the crowds, the coming Olympic games means that there will be a lot of bargains out there for a China travel package. Sadly, one of the things that won't be happening during the Olympics is a greater openness in Chinese politics, including any acknowledgment of China's abhorrent policies toward the captive nation of Tibet. Among the China travel tips currently being circulated by the Chinese government, according to journalist Ruhi Khan is, "a rulebook for foreigners attending the Olympics. The 57-point Q&A format booklet, so far issued only in Chinese, shows how China plans to rein the foreigners. The rulebook prohibits entry of 'those who are believed to potentially engage in other activities that may harm the national security and interests' and explicitly says that 'not all parts of China are presently open to foreigners'..." Be sure to consult your travel agent in China about what behaviors are prohibited by the government. It would not be much fun to spend part of your Chinese vacation in a jail cell, or to have your trip curtailed by being kicked out of the country. |
